The Most Venerable Kiribathgoda Gnānānanda Thero founded Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery. Born into a Catholic family, his family embraced Buddhism when he was six months old. At seventeen, he was ordained at Seruwila Mangala Raja Maha Vihara under the Most Venerable Dambagasare Sumedhankara Mahā Thero. After traditional Sri Lankan monastic education and studying for a Sinhala Honours Degree at Sri Jayawardhanapura University, he discovered the Buddha’s discourses in the Pāli Canon, leading him to leave temple life and pursue Dhamma in forest monasteries.
